Exceptional work hardening: 301 is one of the most readily strengthened grades in the 300 series through cold deformation. It offers good ductility in the annealed condition, while its strength and hardness increase significantly after cold rolling.
Excellent formability: Suitable for cold forming processes such as stamping, bending, drawing, spinning, and roll forming. It is particularly well-suited for parts requiring repeated bending or elastic deformation.
Moderate corrosion resistance: Resistant to atmospheric exposure, water vapor, and general oxidizing media. However, due to lower Chromium and Nickel content compared to 304, it has weaker resistance to pitting corrosion in environments containing salt spray, sweat, or chloride ions.
Good weldability: Can be welded using conventional methods. Post-weld solution annealing is recommended to restore corrosion resistance. Prolonged exposure to temperatures between 450–850°C may cause intergranular corrosion; 301L is recommended for more demanding applications.
Distinct magnetic changes: Essentially non-magnetic in the annealed condition; becomes noticeably magnetic after cold working. Therefore, magnetism alone should not be used to identify the material.
