301 stainless steel (commonly referred to in the industry as 17-7 stainless steel) is a metastable austenitic stainless steel, often hailed as the "Iron Warrior" of the stainless steel world. Thanks to its perfect balance of extremely high strength and hardness after cold working, combined with good ductility, it is widely recognized as the most easily strengthened austenitic steel through cold deformation.
Core Advantages and Features
- Extremely High Cold Work Hardening Rate: This is the most core advantage of 301. Through cold rolling, cold drawing, and other deformation processes, part of its internal austenite transforms into martensite. This allows its tensile strength to surge from ≥520 MPa in the annealed state to over 1300 MPa (and even approaching 1900 MPa), while still maintaining sufficient plasticity.
- Excellent Ductility and Elasticity: While achieving ultra-high strength, it can still withstand repeated bending or stamping deformation without cracking. This makes it highly suitable for manufacturing components that require high elasticity and fatigue resistance.
- Good Corrosion Resistance: It exhibits good rust resistance in normal atmospheric environments and mild corrosive media, along with excellent oxidation resistance (can withstand intermittent temperatures up to 840°C and continuous temperatures up to 900°C). However, it is worth noting that its corrosion resistance in strong acids, strong alkalis, and high-salt environments is inferior to that of 304 stainless steel.
- Magnetic After Cold Working: It is non-magnetic or weakly magnetic in the solution-annealed state. However, after cold working, it exhibits obvious magnetism due to the martensitic phase transformation.
- Easy Machining and Lightweight: Despite its extremely high strength, it is relatively lightweight and easy to process via laser cutting, stamping, bending, and welding (post-weld annealing is recommended to restore corrosion resistance). This makes it ideal for manufacturing various high-strength parts with complex shapes.
